Information on Microsoft

Microsoft is an American multinational computer technology corporation based in Redmond, Washington. Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded the company in Albuquerque, New Mexico on April 4, 1975 after Gates went on leave from Harvard University.

[1] Micro Instrumentation and Telemetry Systems (MITS), the company that created the Altair 8800 microcomputer, was based in Albuquerque. Gates visited MITS to show them his implementation of the BASIC programming language using their system.

[2] Microsoft moved its headquarters to Bellevue, Washington on January 1, 1979, and then to Redmond on February 26, 1986, where it still remains.

[3] The company’s initial public offering was held on March 14, 1986. The stock, which eventually closed at US$27.75 a share, peaked at $29.25 a share shortly after the market opened for trading.

[4] At the time, Gates owned 45% of the company’s 24.7 million outstanding shares, and Allen owned roughly 25% of the shares. After the offering, Gates was worth $233.9 million and Microsoft had a market capitalization of $519.777 million.

[5] Microsoft has acquired 128 companies, purchased stakes in 60 companies, and made 24 divestments. Of the companies that Microsoft has acquired, 99 were based in the United States. Microsoft has not released the financial details for most of these mergers and acquisitions. Microsoft’s first acquisition was Forethought on June 29, 1987, which was founded in 1983 and developed a presentation program that would later be known as Microsoft PowerPoint.

[6] On December 31, 1997, Microsoft acquired Hotmail for $500 million, its largest acquisition at the time, and integrated Hotmail into its MSN group of services.

[7] Hotmail, a free webmail service founded in 1996 by Jack Smith and Sabeer Bhatia.

[8] Hotmail had more than 8.5 million subscribers earlier that month.

[9] Microsoft acquired Seattle-based Visio Corporation on January 7, 2000 for $1.375 billion. Visio, a software company, was founded in 1990 as Axon Corporation, and had its initial public offering in November 1995.

[10] The company developed the diagramming application software, Visio, which was integrated into Microsoft’s product line as Microsoft Visio after its acquisition. On July 12, 2002, Microsoft purchased Navision for $1.33 billion. The company, which developed the technology for the Microsoft Dynamics NAV enterprise resource planning software, was integrated into Microsoft as a new division named Microsoft Business Solutions.

[11] Microsoft Business Solutions later renamed to Microsoft Dynamics.

[12] Microsoft purchased aQuantive, an advertising company, on August 13, 2007 for $6.333 billion, Microsoft’s largest acquisition. Before the acquisition, aQuantive was ranked 14th in terms of revenue among advertising agencies worldwide. aQuantive had three subsidiaries at the time of the acquisition: Avenue A/Razorfish, one of the world’s largest digital agencies.

[13] Atlas Solutions, and DRIVE Performance Solutions.

[14] Microsoft acquired the Norwegian enterprise search company Fast Search & Transfer on April 25, 2008 for $1.191 billion to boost its search technology.

[15] Since Microsoft’s first acquisition in 1987, it has purchased an average of six companies a year. The company has purchased more than ten companies a year since 2005, and acquired 18 firms in 2006, the most in a single year, including Onfolio, Lionhead Studios, Massive Incorporated, ProClarity, Winternals Software, and Colloquis. Microsoft has made four acquisitions worth over one billion dollars: aQuantive, Fast Search & Transfer, Navision, and Visio Corporation. Microsoft has also purchased several stakes valued more than a billion dollars. It obtained an 11.5% stake in Comcast for $1 billion, a 22.98% stake in Telewest Communications for $2.263 billion, and a 3% stake in AT&T for $5 billion. Among Microsoft’s divestments, in which parts of the company are sold to another company, only Expedia, Inc. was sold for more than a billion dollars; USA Networks purchased the company on February 5, 2002 for $1.372 billion. On August 17, 2006, Microsoft acquired 7.92% of its own common stock for $20 billion.

Microsoft’s New Trend – Surface

Darren Waters get a demonstration of how Microsoft’s new touch screen works. As the South by Southwest 2009 conference moves its focus away from interactive and on to film and music after today, some juicy details of Microsoft’s follow-up to Surface have appeared.

First of all we won’t be seeing Surface 2 for at least two years as Microsoft still have it in the development phase and it currently carries the working name of “Second Light”. The updated surface will retain the multi-touch interface we are now getting used to, but introduce a second layer on which to display information.

This additional layer is made possible by adding a second projector to Second Light. Effectively this means that as well as interacting with objects on the screen you can also overlay additional information above it. We can therefore assume Second Light has two levels of interactive surface that work independently opening the way for more detailed information to be presented and managed on the screen.

A surprise addition, but one that will surely bring some interesting new ideas to Second Light, is the introduction of gestures. This will allow the user to make gestures with their hands above the device to carry out actions on screen.

I think it’s clear that Surface is a long-term project for Microsoft of technology that ultimately may end up becoming the new standard interface for interaction with a lot of gadgets. Right now it is very expensive, but so is all new technology that hits the market and this cost will eventually come down. I’d be surprised if Surface 2 wasn’t cheaper than Surface not only to develop but at retail regardless of the new features it introduces.

The information about Second Light given above may just be experiments Microsoft are carrying out in the lab and not final functionality. With at least two years before release you can expect the team to still be experimenting as they already have the core system in place from the original Surface. I think the gesture system is the most interesting addition as it should greatly increase the control you have over the information on the screen – multi-touch input can only take you so far.

For now Surface is too expensive for individuals to own and Surface 2 is just an R&D project inside Microsoft. What version of Surface do you think we’ll be up to before it’s as common and cheap as touchscreen technology is today?

Carol Bartz the new CEO of Yahoo

Yahoo has appointed Carol Bartz, former executive chairman of business software developer Autodesk, as CEO of yahoo. Carol Bartz joins the company and its board of directors with immediate effect and fills the role vacated by Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, who announced his intention to resign in November (nma.co.uk 18 November 2008). Carol Bartz had been just recently tipped for the post of CEO.

She is one of the leading businesswomen in Silicon Valley; she has previously appeared in Fortune magazine’s 50 Most Powerful Women in Business listing.

Bartz spent 14 years at Autodesk and has been credited as a major catalyst in the company achieving revenues in excess of $1.5bn (£820m), while she has also worked with technology specialists Sun Microsystems, Digital Equipment Corporation and 3M.

Roy Bostock, Yahoo chairman, said, “[Bartz] is the exact combination of seasoned technology executive and savvy leader that the Board was looking for, and we are thrilled to have attracted such a world-class talent to Yahoo. She is admired in the Valley as well as on Wall Street for her deep management expertise, strong customer orientation, excellent people skills, and firm understanding of the challenges facing our industry.”

Bartz said, “There is no denying that Yahoo has faced enormous challenges over the past year, but I believe there is now an extraordinary opportunity to create value for our shareholders and new possibilities for our customers, partners and employees.”

The move, coupled with the news that Yahoo president Sue Decker is to step down from her role, has already led to speculation a deal with Microsoft, particularly focused towards search, would be resurrected.

Last week Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said such a transition period was the perfect time, as Microsoft itself had recently appointed a new head of operations, to discuss a potential deal with Yahoo . Hope Carol Bartz will take yahoo to the new direction of success..
